First off, what is a power surge?
Lightning is an example of a power surge and can prove to be highly destructive, however it is not the only cause of power surges. Sun solar magnetic storm activity has been known to cause major grid blackouts and associated power surge damage.
Every year millions of dollars in insurance claims are filed because of power surge damages. Most are victims to a lightning strike. But did you know that power surges are a daily occurrence? Even though those surges are not high power spikes, like lighting, they can be more frequent and prolonged causing a little damage at a time. Some examples of small power surges can be the starting and stopping of high powered electrical devices, like fridges or air conditioners, or even problems with the utility company’s equipment. This never used to be a big problem but since we have electronics in almost all of our appliances even a surge of just 5 Volts can destroy your stove’s ‘computer’.
Today, homes contain an average of $15,000 worth of unprotected electronics. From the fridge to the washer/dryer, from ACs to smoke detectors, all contain electronics that can be damaged by surges.
